From hermes.cam.ac.uk!ms223 Tue Feb 4 11:13:55 1997 Subject: Leicester Co-ed Report Greetings, all. This past weekend Strange Blue sent a co-ed team to the co-ed indoor tournie in Leicester. As far as I could tell, Natalie, Graham, Ico, Craig, Dora, Sander, and I all had a great time. David Mackay fell ill and couldn't come but he sent along a sack of satsumas anyway! Thanks, D. We also picked up Vicky and Susie from the Sneeeky's club and they seemed to have a good time learning to play our more structured style of Ultimate. In any case we all learned a lot and by the end of Saturday we were playing very well as a team. Our first game Sunday morning was in my opinion, our most gelled team effort. There were 29 teams and the format was a little funny, so we had 6 games on SAturday and only 2 on Sunday -- but this meant we slept until 10:00 on Sunday, when Graham began to bring us (well Ico most noticably) breakfast in bed! Cheers, G. Our first game Sat was against Pulp, the eventual winners of the Tournie (Jon Hope, Tara, EJ, Andy from Shotgun, Guy, etc) and we held them to 7-4 with a strong and successful zone D in the end zone! Unfortunately, the zone was never really effective again.... oh well. Close loss against the Colchester GB Juniors (8-7?) in a game we could have won with more time (games were only 18 minutes). Closish wins against Angels and Hint of Lime. Ico scored almost all our points against Hint of Lime and in general, we scored at least half our points in the hammer corner. Graham had 4 or 5 massive interceptions in one game(against the Juniors I think). We got toasted by a tall fast team of Juniors who weren't playing co-ed (Junior teams were exempt from playing with at least 2 of each gender) and this kept us out of the top half of the tournie. Then we came from behind to beat Oxford (vengence is sweet) in a great game with lots of good defense. Dora made a key catch and then threw the hammer for a crucial conversion after a long dispute about wether she was in or out of the zone. A huge team effort. Sunday morning we completely outclassed Hint of Lime (again) with solid handling from Nat and Susie (who loved getting to handle, I think) among others, and hot hands in the end zone from Sander, Graham and Vicky. 8-3 was the outcome. Our last game was the plate final and again we were just ruined by a young tall team of inexperienced male juniors. "Huck high and then go and catch it over the other team" was their strategy, and aside from a couple of airborne D's from Craig and myself, we didn't really stand a chance against it. On offence, I'm sorry to say that we played down to their level and in the end it was something like 11-5 (?) after a 28 minute game. All in all the weekend was a good effort though and I thought we did very well considering we had two brand new players. Co-ed Ultimate is a good game -- especially when it's actually played co-ed -- and I hope we can get teams out to other such events later this year. Thanks for a good weekend to those who went!
