Tournament Report (from the point of view of Strange Blue) ------------------------------------------------------------- Strange Blue, the Cambridge Ultimate frisbee team, participated in the Midlands Indoor Ultimate Tournament the weekend of 11/12 February, had a lot of fun, and received the `Spirit of the Game' award. ------------------------------------------------------------- Twelve teams were present at the two day tournament, hosted by the Leicester team, the `Jesters'. Strange Blue received a gruelling welcome, being placed in the opening game at 9.30am against the number one seeds, `Stan', the Warwick veterans. This 13-3 thrashing was followed by an even bigger 13-2 wopping by the Jesters first team, who eventually took third place in the tournament, beating Stan in a significant upset. Our third game on Saturday was against `Gooey Kablooie', a junior team from Colchester, who played really well, but weren't 7 feet tall like our Dutch special weapon, Richard. Look out for Gooey in the future - The rising stars of British Ultimate. On Sunday, we played in the knockout among the top 8 teams, playing first against `Under the influence', another ex-Warwick team, who thrashed us hollow (13-1) and went on to win the tournament, and then against the Warwick `Bears', to whom we gave a closer game using a specially designed zone defence. We lost 11-7; the Bears went on to take 5th place. Our final game, for 7th place, was the closest of all, against the Loughborough `Smurfs'. We played zone against them too, and won 12-11 in overtime, thus holding our seventh place seeding. The Cambridge team was half university people, and half townies. Of our ten players, five had never played in a tournament before; of these, three were novice players, and one, Ben Gurney, had never played Ultimate before! --- but he took to it like a fish to water, making a crucial layout catch in the end zone in our final game. We got on well together as a team, and the tournie as a whole was really good spirited too. I only saw one serious injury collision involving an enthusiastic Jester and a SFA. We were awarded Spirit by the other teams. Our team song, `world peace through Ultimate' went down well too. ------------------------------------ Other results at the tournie (as far as I recall): 1 UTI 2 SFA 3 Jesters I ----- the top three go on to the indoor nationals 4 Stan 5 Bears I 6 Top Bananas 7 Strange Blue (Spirit) 8 Smurfs ------------------------- 9 Jesters II (Plate) 10 Gooey K 11 Hot Stamp Rejects 12 Bears II ---- David MacKay - URL:ftp://131.111.48.24/pub/mackay/homepage.html
