Nationals and Team Selection
Dear All, 

	It has been suggested that we should try to have two 
teams for the first time at the Nationals this October, so as 
to raise the standard of Cambridge Ultimate, and to have more people
having more fun at a level they are happy with.  By selecting a 
high-quality A-team, it will make it possible to attract into our 
team excellent players like Jim Keyworth who practice with us but 
rarely play with us at tournaments. 

	I am writing with a proposal for how to do this. Please
respond to me if you do not like some aspect of this proposal and have
an alternative suggestion for how to proceed. If we achieve consensus 
on this proposal, then let's go ahead with it. (This message was circulated
July 20 1995, and there was no dissent.)

Proposal for organization of two Strange teams
----------------------------------------------

1) 	Captains
	--------
	Each team will have a Tactical captain and a Spirit captain
	who jointly will be the captain of the team. 

	I suggest that we appoint to these posts:

			Tactical 	Spirit
	A-team		Matthew Robb	Chris Mills
	B-team		Verity Girvan 	David Lovell.

	The captains will be responsible for organizing our practices
	over the next few months in such a way as to produce high
	quality A _and_ B teams.  As last year, we may also appoint 
	coaches (eg Jim K.) to teach us.

2)	The self-selection element
	--------------------------
	Anyone in Strange Blue who wants to can talk to any of the
	four captains to let them know their strength of preference
	for being on each team. (e.g. `I have a 70:30 preference for
	being on the A team relative to the B team').

3)	Final Selection made by Captains
	--------------------------------
	The team lists will be drawn up by the four captains, who 
	will take into account
		a-	players' individual preferences
		b-	performance at practices, including
				consistency of attendance
		c-	the need to achieve a balance of skills 
				in both teams. (Offense/defense, 
				Handling/end-zone, etc.)
                d-      performance at tounaments.

	[Note that it is likely that the National tournament will be a
	two-stage tournament and the rules will require that the
	teamlists of the A and B teams are fixed before both stages.
	The dates, to be confirmed, are October 14th-15th and October
	21st-22nd.]
