BUF Ultim8 Tour 1998 - Event II (Swindon) Strange Blue tournament report by David MacKay and Mike Schell. Seedings and Pools: Pool A Pool B 1 UTI 2 Shotgun 3 Catch 22 4 Fluid Druids 6 Headrush 5 Chevron Action Flash 8 Red I 7 Violently Happy Pool F 12 Mild Mannered Janitors 13 Sneeekys 19 Whiplash 22 Strange Blue 27 Fingers 6 29 Night Fever night fever: we won 13-4. How did we manage to come out so strong from the very first point? Smooth offence straight through to the last point. Go Strange! Whiplash, crazy first point with at least 3 throw-aways before we scored. Then we took it away 13-1. A very promising upset. One of the highights of this game was the endzone play of Phil, who caught 3 catches in the goal --all of these were low throws which were barely above the grass. This led to Phil being christened "the vacuum cleaner." Is Phil's last name Hoover? Another notable was Mike Flintoff, who kept making giant fakes that left many a marker diving in totally the wrong direction and yelling "uuuuuuup!" Fingers 6. a closer game, but we won comfortably. sneeekys: This game was a big opportunity, but Sneeekys played very well, and we lost. janitors: Our closest game. We started out going down 4-0, but then we got it together and brought it back to 9-9. However in the end we lost 13-9. other games Saturday: Shotgun's first game against Chevron was very close. Chevron were up 14-13 in a game to 15; but shotgun pulled back and won. Their game against druids was close too at the start. UTI/Catch was also very close up to half time. At 12-10, UTI were incredibly patient, moving it around for several minutes before finally scoring. They looked like they deserved their number 1 seeding. Sunday: 13-20 knockout, 19:14 we beat gb juniors, even tough they did good hucks and we were poor at picking up swill discs. 14:15 we were down 9-3 at half time to sharks. Then somehow we pulled back to 15-15 and won it sudden death 16-15; there was unfortunate confusion about # of timeouts per half and how the cap worked and when the hooter was. 13:14 - the plate final, against mild mannered janitors. It was raining really hard and it was cold too. We took it away beautifully and at half time we had them 9-4. Then as it got wetter, we had some absurdly long points with numerous turnovers and they pulled back to 16-14, before we finally won 17-14. The last point lasted an age. So Strange Blue won the Plate, and went up from 22nd seed to 13th. Well done SB! Other Sunday games: In the 1-2 final, the wind was stronger and upwind points were rare. But shotgun led the game and were able to huck it upwind as well as downwind. They took the last point upwind to hammer home a convincing victory. The other top games also went as expected and didn't seem as close as Saturday's top games. - except that First Touch and Red both had close games against Chevron?
